Egypt in January: Weather, Costs, Events and Where to Go (2027 Guide)

E By Updated October 2026 15 min read

January is one of the best months to visit Egypt: days are mild and sunny, around 19°C in Cairo and 22°C in Luxor and Aswan, and nights drop to 8–11°C. It is also peak season, so expect higher prices and crowds at the Pyramids and on Nile cruises. Book flights, cabins, and tours early and pack layers.

Most questions we get about January come down to three: how cold does it really get, can I still swim, and will the Pyramids be packed? This guide answers them with ranges and prices we checked in October 2026. It also covers the small planning details that decide whether a January trip feels easy or rushed: sunset at about 5 pm, hotels without heating, and a Luxor balloon flight that the wind can cancel.

1Is January a good time to visit Egypt?

Yes, January is a great month for sightseeing. In Cairo and the Nile Valley, the days are mild and sunny, so you can spend plenty of time at Karnak or the Giza Plateau without worrying about the heat. Rain is uncommon except in Alexandria. However, mornings and evenings can be cool; the Red Sea feels more like spring than summer, and prices are higher, especially during the first week.

January is great for Think twice if
Long days at the Pyramids, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel You want hot beach weather: the sea is about 22–23°C, and the breeze is cool
A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan You dislike cold early starts: dawn departures can feel chilly
Walking Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili You need the lowest prices: January is high season
Coptic Christmas on January 7 and the Cairo International Book Fair You want quiet sites: the big ones are busy, so go at opening time

Here’s a tip from the Egypt Holiday Makers team: If you visit in January, try to start your day early. The light is gentle, the air feels cool, and the main sites are quietest right after they open.

2Egypt weather in January, city by city

Egypt doesn’t have just one climate. Daytime highs are similar across the country, but nights, wind, rain, and sea temperatures can vary widely. These numbers are long-term averages, so check a short-term forecast before your trip.

Destination Typical daytime high Typical night low What it feels like
Cairo and Giza about 19°C (66°F) about 8–9°C (47–48°F) Mild and sunny, breezy, cool evenings
Alexandria about 17–18°C (63–64°F) about 9–13°C (48–55°F) The coolest and wettest: roughly 10 rainy days in January
Luxor about 22°C (72°F) about 8–9°C (46–48°F) Warm in the sun, cold at dawn
Aswan and Abu Simbel about 22–23°C (72–74°F) about 10–11°C (50–52°F) Dry and sunny; the warmest big-site base
Hurghada about 21–22°C (70–72°F) about 11–14°C (52–57°F) Sunny and breezy; sea 22–23°C
Sharm El Sheikh about 20–23°C (68–73°F) about 10–14°C (50–57°F) Sunny, can feel windy; sea about 23°C
Western Desert Pleasant by day Very cold after dark Camping needs real winter gear

Daylight hours are limited. In Cairo, the sun rises around 6:50 am and sets around 5:15 pm. In Luxor, sunset is between 5:20 and 5:30 pm. Visit outdoor sites in the morning or early afternoon. You’ll find the sources for these averages at the end of this guide.

Here’s a tip from the Egypt Holiday Makers team: In Luxor and Cairo, temperatures drop by 12 to 14°C from afternoon to night. Pack three thin layers you can add or remove instead of one heavy coat.

3Is Egypt cold in January?

Egypt feels more cool than truly cold in January, with the chilliest times early in the morning and late at night. For example, afternoons in Luxor can reach 22°C, but by dawn, temperatures may fall to about 8°C. The Nile breeze can make evenings by the river feel colder than the actual temperature. Desert nights get even colder, and the Sinai mountains are the coldest.

Quick tip: some hotels, especially along the coast, may not have heating. If you’re sensitive to the cold, check before booking to see if your room and the pool are heated. Only Alexandria usually gets rain in January, with about 10 rainy days on average. Cairo might get an occasional shower, but Luxor and Aswan are almost always dry.

4What to pack for Egypt in January

  • Bring two or three thin tops, a fleece or sweater, and a light windproof jacket. These will keep you comfortable on Nile decks, boats, and during early mornings.
  • For daytime, pack breathable shirts or T-shirts and long trousers. The sun can still be strong around midday.
  • Wear comfortable closed shoes with good grip. These help you walk on uneven temple floors, tomb steps, and sand.
  • Don’t forget sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. Even if the air feels cool, the sun is still strong.
  • When visiting religious sites, wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Bring a scarf to wrap yourself if needed.
  • For the Red Sea, pack swimwear, a cover-up, and a windproof layer for boat trips. If you get cold easily, bring a 3mm shorty wetsuit for long snorkels or dives. Dive operators usually provide wetsuits, so check with them.
  • For desert trips, bring a warm jacket, hat, and gloves. If you plan to camp, pack a proper sleeping bag.

5Crowds and prices in January

January is the busiest time of year. The pleasant weather makes sightseeing comfortable, so many travelers from colder places visit. Hotels, Nile cruise cabins, and guides are in high demand, especially around New Year. Things usually quiet down after the first week, but the month stays busy.

Dates What to expect Our advice
January 1–7 Tail of the New Year period plus Coptic Christmas. Rooms, cabins, and guides are in highest demand. Book as early as possible and start sites at opening.
January 8–19 Same weather, usually calmer than the first week, still high season. Often the best balance of weather, availability, and price.
January 20–31 Cairo International Book Fair starts on January 20 in New Cairo, and January 25 is a national holiday. Egyptian families also travel during the mid-year school break. Expect more traffic in Cairo, and check closures around January 25.

For most of January, book your flights, hotels, and Nile cruise cabins at least six to eight weeks in advance. For January 1st to 7th, however, book as soon as you set your travel dates. Keep in mind that the most popular activities—such as visiting the Abu Simbel temples, taking a hot air balloon ride, or entering the inner chambers of the pyramids—fill up first.

January 20 to February 2 58th Cairo International Book Fair (Qatar is guest of honor) Held at the Egypt International Exhibition Center in New Cairo. 7Best places to visit in Egypt in January

If you want Go to Why January suits it
Your first look at ancient Egypt Cairo and Giza (2–3 days) Walking the Giza Plateau, Saqqara, and Islamic Cairo is comfortable.
Temples and tombs Luxor (2 nights) Karnak and the Valley of the Kings are easier in the cool morning.
Sun plus monuments Aswan and Abu Simbel The warmest daytime sightseeing base, and a very early start for Abu Simbel.
A slow, easy route A Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan You unpack once and wake up beside a new temple.
Winter sun and snorkeling Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh or Marsa Alam Sunny and dry; Marsa Alam recorded the warmest resort sea temperature, about 24°C in January 2026.
A Mediterranean city day Alexandria (day trip from Cairo) Quieter and cooler; bring an umbrella.

We recommend spending your sightseeing days in Cairo and Upper Egypt. If you want some beach time, add three or four nights on the Red Sea at the end of your trip. It’s best not to try to visit Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, and Alexandria all in one week because the distances between them are significant.

8Nile cruise in January

January is a great time for a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan. Visiting temples like Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae is comfortable, and the sun deck feels nice at midday. It gets cold on deck at dawn and after sunset, so pack a fleece and something windproof.

Our 4-day Aswan to Luxor cruise on a 5-star ship leaves on Mondays and Fridays. It includes full board and guided visits to Kom Ombo and Edfu, starting at $500 per person. Other ships range from about $710 for a standard 5-star ship to around $3,000 for the most luxurious option, depending on the ship and cruise length. Before comparing prices, check if temple entry tickets and festive dinners are included.

Here’s a tip from the Egypt Holiday Makers team: If you want to take a Luxor sunrise balloon flight ($110 per person with us), schedule it for your first morning in Luxor. The Civil Aviation Authority cancels flights if the wind is too strong, as it did on 13 March 2026. Booking early gives you another day to try again if needed.

9Red Sea in January: can you really swim?

Yes, you can swim, but it feels more like spring than summer. The sea is about 22–23°C at Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, which is comfortable for swimming and snorkeling for most people and great for diving. On windy days, it can feel cool, and the breeze might make climbing back onto the boat feel colder than the water.

If you swim often, choose a hotel with a heated pool. Ask your dive or snorkel operator about the wetsuits they offer. Hurghada and Sharm are busy around New Year, so the beaches won’t be empty during the first week.

10Western Desert and the White Desert in January

January brings comfortable desert days with plenty of sun and clear skies. Nights, however, can be tricky. The cold air and clear sky mean you’ll need a warm jacket, a hat, and a good sleeping bag. If you’re camping, check with your operator about the bedding, tents, and heating they provide. Don’t let a sunny afternoon fool you—nights can get very cold.

Most travelers need a visa. In 2026, both the single-entry tourist e-Visa and visa on arrival cost $30, up from $25. Cairo Airport is testing a digital visa on arrival at a slightly higher price. Reports say a government levy will raise the single-entry fee to about $33 on the official portal, but this is not confirmed as of this writing.

Check visa2egypt.gov.eg before you pay. To avoid airport delays, apply for the e-Visa before you travel. Make sure your passport is valid for the required period and use only the official portal. Also, check your own government’s Egypt travel advice before booking.
